Mr. Espy’s performance credits include the front ensemble for the Capital Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from Columbus, Ohio as well as the Concord Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps from Concord, California. John was a member of the Marching Thunder (MU) snare line serving two years as drumline captain. Mr. Espy has also served as percussion arranger and instructor for the Marshall University Marching Thunder. Other arranging and instructing credits include West Clermont, Ross, Sycamore, Batavia, Portsmouth East, Bishop Fenwick and Archbishop McNicholas High Schools.
Mr. Espy is an active adjudicator for the United States Scholastic Band Association as well as a member of the Vic Firth Education Team in the capacity of marching percussion specialist (MPS) and Scholastic Educator (SEP).
Director of Bands
Brian Brown is a native of the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati area. After graduating from Lloyd High School in Erlanger, Kentucky, he attended Eastern Kentucky University and Northern Kentucky University, receiving his Bachelor of Music Education degree. Mr. Brown began his teaching career at Beechwood Independent Schools in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky where he served as Band Director for grades five through twelve. During his tenure at Beechwood, he was named Outstanding Young Band Director in Kentucky by the Phi Beta Mu International School Bandmasters Fraternity.Before coming to Milford, Mr. Brown served as Director of Bands in the Indian Hill Exempted Village School District. Mr. Brown is currently in his twelfth year as Band Director at Milford High School, where his teaching responsibilities include directing the Symphonic Band, Marching Band and Jazz Ensemble as well as team teaching the Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade Bands.Mr. Brown has served as a consultant designer and adjudicator for Concert and Marching Bands as well as Drum Corps and Winter Guards throughout the U.S. He is a member of Music Educators National Conference, Ohio Music Educators Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and the Tri-State Judges Association. Brian and his wife, Cindy reside in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky with their dog, Cooper, and enjoy spending time with their grandson Elijah.

Ms. Jodi Smith
Junior High Band Director
Jodi Smith is the new Milford Junior High School band director beginning in Fall 2014. Ms. Smith returns to the district after serving 8 years as the assistant high school band director from 1999-2007. Her current duties include 6th grade beginning band, 7th grade band, 8th grade band and assisting with high school concert bands, symphonic band, marching band and pep band.
A native of north-central Ohio and cum laude graduate of Bowling Green State University, Ms. Smith was a recipient of the flute studio’s Music Talent Award for undergraduate music majors, and a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota music service fraternity. Following graduation she was an assistant band director at Elder High School on the west side of Cincinnati for three years before beginning at Milford in the fall of 1999. The Milford Concert Band consistently earned superior ratings in Class B at the OMEA Large Group event during her tenure. Throughout the last several years she has maintained a private flute studio at Walnut Hills High School as well as serving as a flute/woodwind clinician at numerous local schools.
Ms. Smith maintains an active performing schedule, serving as co-principal flute/piccolo of the Fillmore Wind Band, the pre-eminent wind band in the Cincinnati area. She is also a founding member of the Fillmore Chamber Music Society, formed in 2014.
Ms. Smith currently resides in Deer Park, Ohio, with her partner, Nick.
Jacob Carpenter joined the band director staff of the Milford Exempted Village School District in 2015. After growing up in and graduating from Milford, he graduated from the University of Kentucky where he majored in Music Education and completed his student teaching with Teresa Elliott at Beaumont Middle School. While at UK Mr. Carpenter was an active member of the Horn studio and participated with the UK Wind Symphony, UK Symphony Orchestra, and served on Undergraduate Staff with the Wildcat Marching Band. During his time at UK, he became a member of the Theta Epsilon chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and spent a term as the President of the Alpha Gamma chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
Mr. Carpenter has worked as a visual/brass instructor for the George Rogers Clark High School Marching Band from Winchester, KY and the Henry Clay High School Marching Band from Lexington, KY. Mr. Carpenter was also the Drum Major Coach/Trainer for the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School Marching Band and the Lafayette High School Marching Band, also in Lexington. Carpenter has taught private horn lessons at Scott County High School in Georgetown, KY and Western Hills High School in Frankfort, KY while also teaching Horn lessons at the Central Music Academy (a program providing free private lessons to financially disadvantaged youths in Fayette County).
After graduating from college, Mr. Carpenter spent his time as a substitute teacher in Fayette County (Lexington). He also played a season with the Central Kentucky Concert Band. Now back in Cincinnati, he plays horn in the Fillmore Wind Band (a performing ensemble at the 2017 Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, IL).
In addition to his scholastic achievements, Mr. Carpenter began his Drum Corps career with the Blue Stars Drum & Bugle Corps from LaCrosse, WI in 2010 as a member of the mellophone section. He also marched with the Blue Stars in 2012 and then continued on as a mellophone section leader in 2013, and drum major in 2014. Mr. Carpenter aged-out as Drum Major for the Blue Stars in their 50th Anniversary corps in 2014. He rejoined the corps as a brass and visual instructor for their 2015 season and has remained on staff since.
